🇧🇮 Gigawatt Burundi

Productive power for rural growth.

From the country's first utility-scale solar field to a new wave of storage, hydro and Energy Hubs — we're deepening reliable clean power where it drives the most growth.

The foundation

Built on a field that already powers the nation.

Gigawatt Global developed and operates the Mubuga solar park near Gitega — Burundi's first private-sector, grid-connected solar field. Online since 2021, it supplies roughly 10% of the country's electricity. That operating base is what makes our next phase fast, low-risk and bankable.

Why it matters: shared land, grid interconnection and an experienced local O&M team mean the 10 MW extension and Energy Hubs deploy on top of proven infrastructure — compressing timelines and cost versus a greenfield start.
The pipeline

Three projects, one local platform.

10 MW solar extension

An approved doubling of the Mubuga field with battery storage and new community connections — adding firm, dispatchable clean capacity to the grid.

10 rural Energy Hubs

Sites allocated by the Ministry of Energy, focused on productive use — electricity for local businesses, services and agriculture, not just lighting.

13 MW Rushiha hydro

A run-of-river hydro project co-developed with SOTEM, diversifying the generation mix and leveraging streamlined deployment from our solar operations.

Trajectory

From first light to a clean-energy platform.

For partners

What we're looking for.

We're engaging investors, lenders and DFIs to finance the extension, storage and Energy Hub rollout. Our PPP framework, operating asset and government relationships provide a de-risked entry point into Burundi's energy transition.
